There few ways to become a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in Sri Lanka. In this post, we direct you find correct path to follow Medi Lab education.

Medical laboratory technicians perform routine laboratory procedures on blood, tissue, and other body fluids using instruments such as microscopes, chemicals, computers, and complex laboratory equipment. Medical laboratory technicians can specialize in one of five different areas: blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology, or microbiology.

University of Peradeniya, University of Sri jayewardenapura, University of Ruhuna and University of Jaffna also conduct B.Sc Medical Laboratory Science degree programmes offers a B.Sc in Medical laboratory sciences where the students will be specialized not just as technicians rather as scientists as you will get a BSc degree in MLT. Students who have good Z-scores from the G.C.E. A/L exam in biological science stream are eligible for this degree and should follow three years of study at the university. Each student will have the privilege for an internship in order to fulfill their practical aspects.

Medical Research Institute (MRI), Sri Lanka is the other governmental body that provides MLT training in professional aspects. Selecting through following procedure, MRI will train technologists to cater both national and international Medical researcher needs.

The recruitment of students to the school is in accordance with the approved scheme laid down by the Department of Health services, Sri Lanka

Should have passed the G.C.E. (A.L.) examination with a credit pass in Chemistry.

Should have passed English language at G.C.E. (O.L.) examination

Students who follow MLT training should study

 Laboratory Management & Histopathology

 Haematology & Blood Bank serology

 Medical Microbiology

 Parasitology & Medical Entomology

 Chemical Pathology

Medi Lab Technicians produced by MRI will then released to the local and international health labour to fulfill country’s medical research assistance and contribution.

Apart from the governmental way there are some good private institutional ways to be a MLT. PATHE academy provides HND opportunities for students who wish to be a MLT even recognized highly in the field. Lab technicians, assistant MLT’s in service with no theoretical knowledge, A/L students seeking a career in the health care service, or any person in the healthcare service looking for career development are eligible for this course. Pass of 03 A/L subjects in one sitting with a pass in chemistry or an aggregate of not less than 30% in A/L . However the prospective students will have to maintain a 80 % attendance rate and undergo 960 hrs of internship to be qualified to receive the Higher National Diploma in M.L.T (HND in MLT)

Describing their aims and objectives PATHE says,

The prime focus of the programme is to prepare professionals in keeping pace with the demand of the healthcare sector labour market. We, in consultation with the Private Medical Hospitals Association, NAITA, PHSRC and other private & government healthcare organizations keep in touch with the developments in order to offer better programme standards & employment opportunities.

For the PATHE, you have to pay 84,400 LKR for the total course of 26 months which consists both academic and internship programs.

Many other private institutes also provide good opportunities to the local students to gain academic and professional experience as Medical Laboratory Technicians.

Do you want to become a pharmacist? Pharmacists distribute prescription drugs to individuals. They also advise their patients, physicians, and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. Nowadays the world is more attentive about the pharmaceuticals, therefore it would be a lucrative business opportunity if you can start your own Pharmacy.

In Sri Lanka there are four major types of pharmacists
• Community pharmacists
• Hospital pharmacists/ government pharmacist
• Pharmacists for special forces
• University B.Pharm degree holders

Community pharmacists – start your own pharmacy:
Most private sector pharmacists found in Sri Lanka are generally produced by the private institutions around the country. One who possesses a good apprentice with two years of professional experience under the supervision of any medical council approved community pharmacist may earn the privilege to acquire the registration of the Sri Lanka Medical Council to practice as a pharmacist. Then he should follow a course work of pharmacology through any recognized institute (see details below for such institutions) which is oriented to the National Medical Council placement examination. After receiving the charter form the Medical council then you can start your own pharmacy and follow on.

Hospital pharmacists are the direct government servants who have the institutional bond with the government health sector. Applying according to the government gazette you can enter the pharmacology field by selecting to the short listed pharmacists to be trained in fulfilling the local health service needs. Two years of academic education followed by a one year practical experience will be given to such students and they will be recruited to the government hospitals and other affiliations. Pharmaceutical chemistry, forensic pharmacology, pharmacognocy are some of the subfields that these students might learn, where they will obtain an in grain practice in the field. However these government servants are strictly prohibited in practicing as community pharmacists while working in a government body.

Pharmacists for Special Forces is one of a less known way of being a pharmacist. Security forces such as Sri Lanka Army and Police services, specially recruit some selected number of pharmacists to cater their own pharmacological needs. Such pharmacists will select under the authorization of the health ministry and directly affiliated to the government training sector and finally let in to the army and police hospitals.

B.Sc. Pharmacology University Degree: The other way of being a pharmacist is to follow a university or a private institutional degree specialized for pharmacology, which even recognized as much as the other governmental ways. Almost all the medical faculties of the local universities provide pharmacology courses, as B.Sc pharmacology (Bachelor of Pharmacy degree). If you fulfill the basic requirements as a bio student with three passes in A/L are eligible for the course, where you can follow this degree for three academic years along with a recognized training period as well. These degree holders are also capable in researching pharmacology where they can draw new knowledge to the field of study. Apart from the professional aspects, these university courses have more outspread research aspects which motivate students in experimenting new pharmaceuticals etc.

Private Institutes that Conduct Pharmacology courses
Aquinas college Colombo; a leading private institution in Sri Lanka, provides some good pharmacy and pharmacology courses to the students through its Diploma in Pharmacy Management and Practice course. Students who have three passes in A/L bio stream are eligible for the study.

PATHE academy, offers a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Pharmacy which is said to be one of the precious gift to local students to get the pharmacology qualifications. School leavers who are looking to enter in to the medical professional sector, those working in a Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical related organization, any person in the Healthcare Service looking for career development are welcome to this diploma where it will provide the students a deep knowledge and a practice in following fields of study.

• Basic Pharmaceutical English Forensic
• Pharmacy Pharmaceutics
• Human Anatomy & Physiology
• Pharmacology Pharmacognocy
• Pharmaceutical Management Pharmaceutical Ethics
• Pharmaceutical Marketing Practical and Internship

Affiliated to reputed Indian universities PATHE will offer this diploma for a sum of 36,900 LKR for all two years of both academic and professional study. For pharmacology numerous foreign study opportunities are also available.

Therefore in studying and practicing pharmacology in Sri Lanka, you might consider these details and facts which we believe essential to you in choosing the correct path.

In Sri Lanka the standard and internationally recognized way of English learning is through the British Council. Keeping direct contact with its administrative bodies in UK, BC cater different types of English courses for the students form primary level to the advanced levels. Primary young learners, senior young learners, teenagers and junior young learners are the four major course levels offered by the British Council. Yet it has higher standards, the course fees are even bit higher where 18,500 LKR needed to pay per one term for a four termed course level. All the courses can be followed either at Colombo branch or at Kandy.

The other popular place to learn English in Sri Lanka is Aquinas Institute. Located within the city limits of Colombo, it caters different types of English learning opportunities for a reasonable price. English as a Subject at G.C.E (A/L), Advanced Certificate in English for Business, Certificate in English for Business are some of courses available at Aquinas. Less than 10,000LKR you can complete any course in three, four or six months consecutively. Aquinas is also considered as one of the oldest institutes in Sri Lanka for English learning and many other study areas, which is now considered not just as an institute but a reputed private university.

BCIS, Bandaranayke Center of International Studies is also providing good English courses for you for affordable prices. Under its language teaching program it offers a 100 hours English language program for anyone who keen in studying this international language.

University of Colombo has a well recognized English language study courses for both academics and professionals. Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA), University of Colombo, offers English Language certificate course and English certificate course for teachers. ELTU; English Language Teaching Unit affiliated to the Department of English also conduct these courses as part time diplomas during weekends.
IEM- Institute of English Maharagama is also a reputed institute for English language learning. Dr. Kithsiri Jayasuriya as the founder and the present director of the institute has been introduced a monthly basis payment method to the students to overcome the bulk paying issue. Though it is flexible in payments it has never being lost its reputation or the recognition among students. Grade parallel classes, English literature classes and diploma classes are available in IEM.

Apart from these pioneer institutions Susil Nanayakkara, Pujitha Wijesinghe, Noelin Hunter, Rathna Wijethunga, and many others are also conducting private institutions for learning English in Sri Lanka. Focusing mainly on spoken and the elocution paradigms of the language these institutions assist hundreds and thousands of students to improve their English. Home tuition, group tuition, night tuition, are some of the other minor but rather effective ways of learning English here.

Even though above all methods are said to be the best ways of learning English, there is one other way that you might use which will be the best and economic way of learning such language. Because it is a language, it has to be practiced by own. Therefore self learning is much essential even while studying at an institute. Reading English books, novels, newspapers, watching and listening to English news, watching English movies, following good speech accents, talk to friends and family and moreover being with the language is more worth.
