Online degrees in Sri Lanka

Now you can obtain a degree or diploma without attending a university or an institute. These are called as online degrees. Although this is a novel concept to Sri Lanka it’s a much popular option in other foreign countries. All you need to have is an internet-connected computer and required financing. Different types of qualifications are awarded through this method such as Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters Degrees. online degrees of Sri Lanka

Several Online degrees were initiated in Sri Lanka in 2003 under Distance Education Modernization Project (DEMP). DEMP is an initiative of the Ministry of Higher Education. The main objective of DEMP is facilitating the means to develop online distance learning (ODL) institutions and a means for delivering ODL throughout the country.

In Sri Lanka some state universities, professional associations, private and public sector education institutions offer number of online degrees. Out of them Universities of Colombo and Rajarata are pioneer online degree providers. They offer number of online Bachelors and Masters Degrees. You can choose an online course according to your preference. There are different subject areas offered by institutes such as Management, Marketing, Science, Engineering, IT and Cookery.

There are many advantages of online degree programmes. The main benefit is you can obtain a degree while you’re engage in other work such as employment. At the same time it will save your time and travelling cost. This has become a popular option in foreign countries as you can enroll for a course of an institute which is far from your home town. For example a student live in Galle can enroll for a course in Rajarata University. Financial assistance is also available to needy students under the Stipend Program. However there are some disadvantages of these online degrees. The main drawback is there will be less interaction between lecturers and students. Sometimes you may feel boring rather than studying in a classroom with number of other students. Also you need to have a good internet-connected computer at your home or working place.

    Does anybody know whether there are any state/private course providers in Sri Lanka for Celtic Studies? A B.A perhaps? The entire course to be completed in Sri Lanka and not partiall abroad. Even an online course would suffice.

    @ERESHA – UCSC BIT has not strated this year due to UGC’ directive to stop external degrees. However you can join much expensive BIT offered by University of Moratuwa.
    Check their web site for details, Classes are conducted at ESOFT, IDM etc.

    Currently only one postgraduate level couse is conducted online i.e.Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing conducted by Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing. But few Bachelors degrees are conducted. Students completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing receive advance standing towards an MBA from BuckinghamshireUniversity, UK. Many other Local and International MBA programmes give advance standing. More details can be obtained from edu.stproducts@slim.lk.

    Duration is 1 year .Two intakes per year (June & December) . Submission of application two weeks prior to the commencement
