New Zealand Development Scholarships for Sri Lankans
The New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) scheme offers the opportunity to people from selected developing countries to undertake development-related studies in New Zealand.
Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka: Up to nine (9) NZDS-Open scholarships will be offered to eligible candidates for study beginning in the 2011 academic year, with an equitable spread across all three countries.
This may include study related to education, health, rural livelihoods, governance, human rights, or economic development, depending on the human resource development training needs of the home government.
New Zealand -Development Scholarships are offered for full-time, tertiary level study at participating New Zealand education institutions.

I write on behalf of a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk who is a Permanent Resident in New Zealand and head of a small Buddhist temple in Hamilton. The aims of the temple include serving the people of the wider Waikato region with techniques and advice on how to improve their lives, live more happily and deal with problems both big and small. Of course, this requires a good command of the English language and the monk, wanting to serve to the best of his ability, started a course at Wintec this year to improve his English. He would like to continue with the course in 2011 but has very limited funds and would like to apply for a scholarship for his studies next year. Please could you advise me if you grant scholarships for people in this kind of situation and, if so, how we can apply for one. If not, I would appreciate any advice on other institutions we could approach.
